The Rev. William Stopani was born at Lerwick on 12th December 1883. He entered Blairs College in 1900 and three years later was transferred to the Scots College, Valladolid where he was ordained on the 8th October 1911.
Returning to Scotland Father Stopani was appointed to St Augustine's, Langloan where he remained until 1931 when he was placed in charge of St Brigid's, Newmains.
When he went to Newmains Mass was said in a school-chapel which had served the parishioners since 1871. Father Stopani determined to build a church and in spite of failing health he succeeded. The new church was the realization of his ambition; it will also be a fitting monument to his memory.
Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated in St Brigid's, Newmains by the Very Rev. Canon Mullin of St Augustine's, Langloan, assisted by the Rev. James Marr, Peterhead (cousin of Father Stopani), and the Rev. Patrick Plunkett, St Anne's, Cadzow. The Rev. Francis Hamilton was master of ceremonies, and the music of the Mass was rendered by a choir of priests under the direction of Rev. Alexander Hamilton, Shieldmuir. The Right Rev. Mgr. Daly, V.G., was present in the sanctuary and the panegyric was preached by the Very Rev. Canon Mullin of St Augustine's, Langloan. |
